Welcome! Tuloy po kayo!
In 2000, the NHS in Sussex was suffering from a shortage of nursing staff and began a recruitment campaign in the Philippines.
In the past 25 years, hundreds of Filipinos have answered that call for help and come to work in hospitals and healthcare services across Sussex, making the area their home. 913 Filipinos currently work for University Hospitals Sussex.
Our Bayanihan exhibition celebrates 25 years of Filipino nurses and healthcare staff working in University Hospitals Sussex. It is a thank you to Filipino staff, past and present, who have cared for so many patients during that time.
It is also a celebration of Philippines Independence Day, a national holiday held on 12 June every year. This year marks the 127th anniversary of the Philippine’s independence from Spain.
The Philippines
The Philippines is an archipelago, a chain of 7,641 islands, in the western Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia. The capital city, Manila, in the north of the country, is 6,693 miles away from Brighton.
Filipino staff working in University Hospitals Sussex have travelled over 7,000 miles to bring their caring skills to support the NHS and build their lives and careers here.
Bayanihan
Bayanihan is a central part of Filipino culture – rooted in helping each other and working together towards a common goal for the benefit of the whole community.
The Philippines is renowned for the quality and caring approach of its nurses and healthcare staff, which is rooted in the Bayanihan way of life. This is reflected by the Filipino staff working in Sussex today.
This exhibition was made possible thanks to My Charity – University Hospitals Sussex, the Trust’s dedicated charity. Please consider making a donation today to help us continue supporting patients and staff across our hospitals.
