Glioblastoma research made possible by Gifts in Wills

My Charity is dedicated to supporting the Trust’s Research and Innovation strategy, supporting clinicians like Dr Stephen Robinson to undertake his PhD. We were able to further support his work by purchasing a specialist microscope with funds received directly from a gift received in a will.

Glioblastomas are the most frequently found type of cancerous brain tumour in adults. These tumours are a major problem because they grow very fast, are highly aggressive, often come back even after treatment, and are hard to kill with the standard treatments we have now.

Current treatments are highly invasive, mainly involving extensive surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible, followed by radiation therapy. These issues mean that we urgently need to find new and better ways to detect and treat glioblastomas.

This research, funded by a charity, is focused on developing simple blood tests to diagnose and track glioblastomas. Instead of looking directly at the brain, the scientists will look at tiny particles in the blood cells which act like little messengers, and they carry “clues” about the tumour’s existence and specific type.

This research could potentially diagnose the tumour, figure out its specific type and check if treatment is working all without invasive surgery or procedures. This would lead to much easier and safer way to manage the disease. The study is directly involving local patients to make this cutting-edge research a reality in the clinic.
