The Maple Suite: Turning Grief into Comfort
Shelley’s journey began on June 11, 2015, the day her stillborn daughter, Rosie, was born at Worthing Hospital. Shelley recalls the “unbearable” experience of being surrounded by the cries of living newborns. Following Rosie’s birth, with no space on the maternity ward, the Hospital Chaplain secured a cold cot and arranged for Shelley and Rosie to stay overnight in the Chapel, giving them precious time together.
“I didn’t want another mother to have the same experience,” Shelley said. This resolve led to the fundraising for the dedicated Maple Suite.
Shelley ran the South Downs Way Ultra Marathon on Rosie’s first birthday, covering 100 miles and raising over £8,000. These funds ensured the Maple Suite became more than just an office conversion.
The money created a homely space away from the clinical ward, complete with a kitchen and beautiful décor. Crucially, its location means mothers experiencing stillbirth no longer have to enter the main maternity suite.
The Maple Suite offers “not just space, but time,” allowing families to cuddle and spend precious final moments with their baby before saying goodbye.
